Summertime Tattoo Tips

Living in Florida is great! We have warm weather and sunny beaches all year round, but summertime means more fun in the sun than usual. Be sure to take care of your tattoos with this simple guide.

1. Never go swimming with a new tattoo.

New tattoos require more care than healed ones. Be sure that after getting a fresh tattoo that you keep it out of the water! You definitely don't want to submerge an open wound in the ocean....fish poop in there. This means pools too...people pee in there!

Exposing a fresh tattoo to the kinds of bacteria found in the ocean and pools could affect the way the tattoo heals and possibly cause infection.

Yep, this means if you have a tropical beach vacation planned, make sure you get tattooed at least a month before. Or better yet, wait until you get back!

Even if the water is totally clean (like a bath) you still shouldn't submerge your tattoo. It could get waterlogged and cause the healing top layer to fall off prematurely. Yes, showering is still ok.

2. Use SPF.

We know you want to show off that sweet ink at the beach, but making sure you protect your tattoo from the sun will ensure that your tattoo stays looking great for longer.

When you are out for long periods of time, make sure you are using a good quality sunscreen. When sunscreen isn't an option, keep your tats covered with loose protective clothing. Never put sunscreen on a fresh tattoo!!!

Like any dermatologist will tell you, the better you protect your skin, the healthier it will be.

3. Hydrate!

Florida summers are hot hot hot! Make sure you drink lots of water. Water hydrates your whole body, including your skin where your tattoos live. Hydrated skin is healthy skin.

4. Moisturize.

In addition to keeping hydrated on the inside, keeping your skin from drying out with lotion and/or aloe will improve your skins appearance and keep your tattoos looking great for longer. Even when a tattoo is healed, we recommend moisturizing them (and the rest of your skin) Multiple times per week. Especially when it's hotter than heck outside!

5. Eat right and take the right supplements.

Huh? Are we talking about tattoos or fitness?

Both! Your body's general health directly impacts how your tattoos look and age over time. Ensure your health by choosing lean proteins, veggies, whole grains etc. Taking supplements like a multivitamin, biotin and collagen can help too! Eating right will directly affect how you feel, and how you and your tattoos look.

Your body is the only one you get, and your tattoos will last a lifetime, take care of them!

Taking care of your body and following a good skin care regiment will allow you to have fun in the sun AND keep your tattoos looking awesome!
